The Stockton & Darlington Railway Heritage Action Zone – Research Projects

The Stockton & Darlington Railway opened on 27 September 1825, connecting places, people, communities and ideas and ultimately transforming the world. The Stockton & Darlington Railway Heritage Action Zone ran from 2018 to 2023 and was established to protect and raise awareness of the Stockton & Darlington Railway in the lead up to the line's 200th anniversary, and to develop its potential to deliver economic growth and regeneration in the local area. The Heritage Action Zone included a significant amount of new research. This first webinar in a 2-part series will explore some of this research work, identifying what was unique about the Stockton & Darlington Railway, and how this history is visible in sites across the 26-mile route.

This webinar, the second in a 2-part series, will explore the successes and challenges of the different strands of work undertaken during the Heritage Action Zone, including designation, repair, re-use and community engagement, as well as looking at the project's legacy, and the long-term future of the line.
