The collection consists of 172 colour slides, copied from an unpublished volume by Llewellyn Jewitt, entitled 'Relics of Primeval Life, Celtic, Roman, Saxon, Derbyshire, Staffordshire, Nottinghamshire', dating from approximately 1850. The volume contains watercolours by Jewitt, depicting archaeological artefacts from these counties. The watercolours were commissioned from Jewitt by Thomas Bateman, an English antiquary who excavated many barrows in the Derbyshire area during the mid 19th century.
The original volume is held by the Weston Park Museum (formerly Sheffield City Museum) as part of the Thomas Bateman Collection. The slides, which were probably created in the 1980s, are not annotated, but a print out of the Weston Park Museum database relating to the watercolours, with additional information for many of the images, is kept in the collection file.
