Collection: Paul Crampton Collection

Description

The collection comprises 101 black and white photographic prints compiled by novelist and local historian Paul Crampton, documenting the town of Canterbury during the mid 20th century. Crampton has published several books on Canterbury, and many of the prints are copies of those used in the publications. The subject matter of much of the collection is bomb damage during the Second World War, and many of the images were published in 'The Blitz of Canterbury', Crampton, 1989. The photographs, which are copies of originals presumably held by Crampton, were taken by a variety of photographers including the Kent Messenger, the Kentish Gazette, Mr A Moody, and Mr Bill Entwhistle. Approximately half of the prints are marked 'The Fisk-Moore Collection', presumably relating to the photographers B and W Fisk-Moore. The collection offers an interesting overview of the city during the mid 20th century, but its particular strength is in its visual documentation of the impact of the Second World War on the buildings and people that lived there.
