Description

The first prototype of the Bristol Brabazon, designed by the Bristol Aeroplane Company, was constructed in 1945. The factory at Filton was expanded and the runway was extended westwards to accommodate the aircraft. The new runway was 2,725 yards long and 100 yards wide and came at the cost of Charlton village, which was demolished and the residents relocated to Patchway. A temporary flying strip was laid, for use while the new runway was under construction.
