The Manchester Aquatics Centre was built to host the swimming and diving events of the 2002 Commonwealth Games. At the time it was only swimming complex in the country with two 50-metre pools. Construction began in 1999, and the pool was officially opened by Her Majesty the Queen in September 2000.
