Description

The Manchester Aquatics Centre was built to host the swimming and diving events of the 2002 Commonwealth Games. At the time it was only swimming complex in the country with two 50-metre pools. The building's asymmetrical curved roof was designed to imitate the outline of a diver. Construction began in 1999, and the pool was officially opened by Her Majesty the Queen in September 2000.

This image was catalogued as part of the Breaking New Ground Project in partnership with the John Laing Charitable Trust in 2019-20.
