Description

During World War One, Portland Castle served as part of a Naval base, seeing the castle specifically used for the manufacture and testing of torpedoes. This plan may relate to conversion works at the site. Notes on the sheet state that the buildings coloured in blue belong to Schedule B, buildings in yellow to Schedule C, although this may relate to an earlier copy as it does not correspond to colours used on this plan.

Regarding the dating of this sheet: the original drawing is dated Jul 1914, but other very similar hand-tinted copies in this series are dated 1929, hence the long creation date range.
