The map shows spot heights on land and depths at sea. There is a key to abbreviations and explanatory notes below the title in the lower left-hand corner. The item has been stamped 'SECRET' in the upper right-hand corner and 'OFFICE COPY' in the lower left-hand corner. A separate stamp in the lower left-hand corner notes the date of 11th July 1903. The map shows 'arcs of fire' from various points along the coast including the Castle, Spanish Battery and Sunderland and Seaham Harbours. There is no conventional scale but longitude and latitude are marked at the borders of the map. A hand-written note across much of the right and side of the item notes the number '179' and that the item should be kept with other items relating to Tynemouth Castle.
