The Review of SMRs was carried out in order to review and compare (and make recommendations for the future) the function and organisation of SMRs and the NMR; and to harmonise standards for documentation and data standards. It was undertaken between 1991 and 1992 and culminated in the publication. in 1993, of `Recording England's Past: A Review of National and Local Sites and Monuments Records in England'.
