Description

Box containing 167 prints in 26 packets, and comprising:

- views of a Laing staff sports day in 1986; - prints and copy photographs, some with original negatives, showing buildings, projects and people related to the early history of the Laing family and company, from the 1880s to the 1960s, with some 1990s views of gravestones and surviving relatives in the Carlisle area; - 1980s photographs of the former Laing home at Caldew House, Sebergham; - a print showing an architect's model for King's College Refectory (though which King's College is not specified); - prints and negatives showing various Laing projects from the 1920s to the 1970s, including Tyrell's End, Eversholt; Arnold School, Nottingham; RAF Benson; Woodlands nurses flats, Greenwich; and Ashington Hospital c. 1964; - portraits of Sir John Laing from the 1950s and 1960s; - group photographs from the opening of Woodcroft Hall in 1928; - portraits of Maurice and Kirby Laing from the 1950s to the 1980s; - copy photographs showing Laing works from the 1930s and 1940s, including sea forts, airfield hangers and a canal, also with general views of aggregate loading, pipeline laying and trench digging; - copy photographs showing airfield construction by Laing in the early 1940s; - views of the newly-completed SavaCentre in Washington, Northumberland, in 1977; - views of the newly-completed Whitbread Brewery in Luton in 1969; - two prints showing a BOAC Boeing 747 airliner at Heathrow Airport in 1977; - prints from 1978 showing Courage's Berkshire Brewery under construction, and the newly-completed Skerton Weir in Lancaster, with views of its inauguration event; - two prints from 1973 showing scale models of oilfield drilling platforms; - group photographs and event pictures from 1955 to 1990s, including a portrait of the Council for Civil Engineers in 1977; officials at the opening of the 4000th new house in Leicester in 1955; various events featuring Martin Laing; and a retirement event at the Dorchester Hotel in 1974; - a folder of correspondence relating to the Laing archive and its contents, some of which had likely become separated from other items in the collection.
