Acoustic Mirror, Sunderland, Tyne and Wear

This acoustic mirror was built to listen for the sound of approaching enemy Zeppelins. This was the only way of giving an early warning to the surrounding area during World War one. The mirror was part of a chain of similar acoustic devices located on the north east coast. They ran from the Tyne to the Humber. This system was later replaced by Radar.
