Aldborough Roman Town, Aldborough, North Yorkshire
This is one of the mosaics found during excavations at Aldborough Roman Town. It was the Romanised regional capital of the Brigantes tribe. It was known as Isurium Brigantum. The towns defences were built in the mid to late 2nd century and rebuilt in the mid 3rd century AD. Evidence from coins found there suggest that the town was occupied to the end of Roman rule in the time of the emperor Honorius. Although it appeared to have been in decline during the late 4th century. There are also two in-situ mosaic floors from a Roman town house, this is one of them.
