Arch in the City Wall, Maddock's Row, Exeter, Devon
A semi-circular arched opening in the City Wall, with a keystone dated 1772. The arch was cut into the older walls. Exeter’s defences date from Roman times and were repeatedly repaired and strengthened in the middle ages. New gates were provided at each of the four entrances to the city — the north, east, west and south gates. The last two, which commanded the two busiest entries, were grand affairs with projecting bastions.
