BP Oil Refinery, Isle of Grain, Kent

Finally closing in August 1982, the now partially disused Kent Oil Refinery could process 10 million tons of crude oil per year and fuelled the adjacent Grain Power Station, the largest oil-fired power station in Europe when built. During World War II, the facility was used in Operation PLUTO (PipeLine Under The Ocean). The Kent refinery supplied petroleum to advancing Allied forces via the Dungeness pumping station and a cross channel pipeline known as DUMBO.
