This engraving is titled "Butcher Row, Whitechapel". It shows what everyday life in the street looked like in the early Victorian era. Meat can be seen hanging in several of the shop fronts - as the street name 'Butcher Row' tells us, this was an area of butchers. The names on the shops - Henry Woodley and Hickinbotham are both listed as butchers in the trade directories from this period. The building on the far left says 'Charrington, Head & Co. - imperial wine & stout warehouse', they are listed as brewers.
