Coal Chute, Hopping Hill Terraces, Shaw Lane, Belper, Derbyshire

This coal chute is next to No 14 West Terrace, Hopping Hill. It was built between 1800 and 1819. It is an example of the design ideas of the Strutt family who built these houses for their workers. The chute went from the road into a yard at the end of the terrace to provide coal for all the houses. The road was widened so that carts could tip their loads directly into the chute. At that time people depended on coal for heating and cooking.
