Coal Duty Boundary Post, Maiden Lane, Crayford, Greater London
This post marked the boundary at which duty (tax) was payable on coal and wine. It was put up by the City of London in c1861. It is made of cast iron and was cast by Henry Grissell at the Regent Canal Ironworks. If you passed the post you were on land belonging to the City had to pay the tax. It was set up as part of the London Coal and Wine Duties (Continuance) Act of 1861. The tax on coal dates back to the 1660's.
