Customs House, North Street, Middlesbrough

This building dates from around 1836 - 1840 and was designed by G. Burlison (Darlington). It was originally built as a coal exchange and hotel. It was used as a Customs House from 1881 - 1960 and then as a community centre. It is one of the few remaining buildings from the original town. The customs controlled trade into and out of the harbour. Taxes had to be paid on goods and so cargoes had to be checked.
