Dorchester County Hospital, Dorchester, Dorset

The hospital was founded in 1838 and the buildings were designed shortly after in a Jacobean style. The north wing opened in 1841, the central wing in 1846, the south wing in 1859 and the chapel in 1862. The architect was Benjamin Ferrey and it was built from dressed Portland stone. The cornice was decorated with an inscription "Praise the Lord O my soul and forget not his benefits who forgiveth all thy sin and healeth all thine infirmities." A new, replacement, hospital was officially opened on 8 May 1998. The old hospital site has since been redeveloped for housing, a retirement home, public car parking and tennis courts.
