Ford Road, Dagenham, Greater London

The Ford Motor company bought land at Dagenham Dock from Samuel Williams & Sons Ltd in 1924. Construction of the Ford factory began in 1929 and it opened in 1931. London County Council built 24,000 homes in Dagenham, Barking and Ilford between 1921 and 1934. Houses were built to allow working people to move from London's East End. Public transport was improved to allow them to travel back into London for work. No factories were built apart from the Ford Factory. The main Dagenham car production works closed in 2002, but a remodelled diesel engine plant remains on the site.
