Former Armstrong Gun Factory, Woolwich Arsenal, Woolwich, Greater London
This gun factory was built to the designs of David Murray in 1856 for the Royal Gun Factory Department. It was for the turning and finishing of gun barrels. It was temporarily occupied from 1858 by W.G. Armstrong, the `Engineer of Rifled Ordnance'. Armstrong developed the method of manufacturing rifled guns with stronger barrels, which were adopted by both the army and navy and produced under licence at Woolwich. The factory was altered in the 1870s and in 1911. It was then converted into a storehouse and office in 1967-9. It is an important building in the history of British ordnance.
