HM Prison Wandsworth, Greater London
HMP Wandsworth is a category 'B' local prison with a modern capacity of 1,371 persons. Opened in 1851 as The Surrey House of Correction, Wandsworth was built on the same principle as Pentonville prison, utilising a 'panopticon' design. The building featured a central hub with separate spokes which helped to manage the separation of inmates. 135 inmates were put to death from 1878 to 1961.
