The central hall of A to F wings at HMP Manchester. The prison was built in 1866-68 to designs by the architect Alfred Waterhouse. The prison was also known as Strangeways, after the area of Manchester in which it is located. It was built to look after the most dangerous criminals and was also a place where corporal punishments were carried out. As part of this 100 people, both men and women, have been hanged at the prison since it was built.
