Hot Brine Bath, Shanklin Chine, Shanklin, Isle of Wight
This hot brine bath dates from c1845. It is a marble basin with a sloping back and 2 steps at the front with a wooden handrail. This bath was removed from a cottage in 1970. Sea water was piped to the cottage and heated in a large copper tank by means of a fire underneath. Hot brine baths were thought to have special health giving properties but the practice became less common towards the end of the 19th century when sea bathing became more popular.
