Icehouse, South end of Colston Hill, Stapleton, Bristol
A sunken, domed ice house with a pointed-arched entrance. It was built of brick in the early 19th century. Ice houses were usually found in the grounds of large country houses. In the days before refrigerators ice houses were packed with ice cut from frozen ponds in the winter. The ice was then used in the summer.
