This area of London was the site of the Priory of St John and St Mary's Nunnery. Both these institutions were closed at the Dissolution of the Monasteries, 1535-40. St James' was built on the site of an earlier church in 1788-92, the spire being based on that of St Martin-in-the-Fields, Trafalgar Square.
