King Edward VI Grammar School, Stratford upon Avon, Warwickshire
Interior view of a room known as the Guild Chamber in the King Edward VI Grammar School on Church Street. It shows one of the classrooms with long, well-worn desks and a teacher's desk against the wall beside the fireplace. The King Edward VI Grammar School is housed in the former Guildhall of the Guild of the Holy Cross. The Guildhall was built in 1417. The guild was founded in 1269. It was closed down in 1547 and the Guildhall passed to the corporation, who used the hall for meetings until 1842. Plays were performed here 1569 and later. The guild's school was re founded as the present grammar school in 1555. The Over Hall was used for teaching. Its most notable pupil was, it is said, William Shakespeare.
