Landport Gate, St George's Road, Portsea, Portsmouth
The Landport Gate provided the main entrance to fortified Portsmouth prior to the demolition of the town's fortifications in 1875. It is the only gateway to survive on its original site. The design of the gate has been attributed to Nicholas Hawksmoor, though it was constructed in 1760 after his death. While built primarily for defensive purposes, this elegant town gate is also a symbol of civic pride, and is a rare survivor from this period.
