Liberty Shoe Company Factory, Eastern Boulevard, City Of Leicester

Looking across the Grand Union Canal towards the Liberty Shoe Company factory. Shoe making was a major industry in Leicester from the 1880s. This factory was built in 1918-1919. It was designed by Howard Henry Thompson for the Lennard Brothers. The architecture is very different from the design of the older factory next door to it. It was to produce a new range of high quality women's shoes under the brand name 'Liberty'. This is one of a series of photographs taken to record factories in Leicester at this time. This building was demolished in 2003.
