Listening Post, Easington, East Riding of Yorkshire
This listening post, also known as an acoustic mirror, dates back to 1916 and lies near the coast off the Easington road. It is made of concrete and is rectangular with a sloping east face, containing a shallow dish 15 feet across. There is a microphone mounting in front of the dish. Before the days of radar there was no way of knowing if enemy aircraft were approaching. This device picked up and amplified the sound of the engines of approaching planes thus giving some advance warning. There were a series of posts like this along the coast. This system was replaced by radar.
