Listening Post, Redcar Road, Redcar, Redcar and Cleveland
This listening post is 330 metres north of Wheatlands Farmhouse and dates back to 1916. It is sited on a flat plain, 1,200 metres from the North Sea coast. It was designed to give an early warning of approaching enemy Zeppelins and other aircraft in World War I. It is a "U" shaped wall about 4.5 metres high with a circular concave depression in the middle. This acted as a reflector dish to concentrate sound waves towards a microphone mounted on a wooden pole that is now missing. There were a series of posts like this along the coast. This system was replaced by radar.
