Lower Market, Exeter, Devon

A plan of the market drawn by the architect Charles Wheeler in 1835. The Lower Market was designed as a butchers' market. It opened on Friday, 9th December 1836. It was demolished after the war when it was very badly damaged by bombing on 4th May 1942. After the lower market opened it was decided that Exeter should have 2 markets one for the lower part of the town and one for the higher part. Wheeler also designed the Higher Market in Queen Street which survived the blitz and later became part of the Guildhall Shopping Centre.
