M1 Motorway

The M1 motorway was the first long-distance motorway to be built in Britain and the first motorway to consist of three lanes. The first phase, a 73 mile stretch, was built mainly by John Laing and Son Ltd and ran from St Albans in Hertfordshire to Crick in Northamptonshire. This sign shows the cost of the project and the motorway under construction.
