Memorial to Pretoria Pit Disaster, School Street, Westhoughton, Greater Manchester
This is a memorial to those killed in the Pretoria Pit Disaster. The Pretoria Pit was a complex of coal mines owned by the Hulton Colliery Company. There is an inscription in memory of the 344 men and boys killed in an explosion at the Pretoria pit in Westhoughton on the 21st December 1910. The monument also serves as gravestone to 24 unidentified bodies. The Pretoria pit disaster was the worst in the historic county of Lancashire.
