Modern sterilising and scrubbing-up equipment, Hope Hospital, Salford, Greater Manchester

The 'modern' sterilising and scrubbing-up equipment between the operating theatres at Hope Hospital in 1940. The Salford Union Infirmary opened in 1879 on the site of an isolation hospital. The infirmary became Hope Hospital in 1882. It housed the 'chronic sick', providing accommodation for 880 patients. It was extended several times and by 1940 the total number of beds was over 1,250. Much of Hope Hospital was destroyed during World War Two; it merged with Salford Royal Hospital in 1994 and is now the main site of the Salford Royal Hospital NHS Trust (2018).
