Newbury Park Station Bus Shelter, Ilford, Greater London

Newbury Park Station Bus Shelter was designed by Oliver Hill in 1937 but it was not built until after the war. It is a high arched open structure with a copper clad barrel vault roof. It is 150 ft long and 30 ft high with 7 concrete arches spanning 60 ft. A plaque records that it received a 1951 Festival of Britain Award. It is a good example of how a functional building can be designed to be an impressive addition to the landscape. There was an increase in the number of bus stations, shelters and huge bus garages as people began to live further away from work or family. Public transport grew both in towns and over longer distances.
