Newlyn Art Gallery, New Road, Penzance, Cornwall
Newlyn Art Gallery was designed by James Hicks for the Newlyn School of Art. It opened in 1895. There is a set of 4 panels on the front of the building. Their design represents the four elements of earth, fire, air and water (taken from Genesis 1). They show birds, mammals, reptiles of the earth and fish. They were made by Philip Hodder of Newlyn and students with artistic direction from the Newlyn painter Gotch. The design was by the famous Arts and Crafts copper craftsman JD MacKenzie. The Newlyn School is recognised as being one of the most significant regional schools of painting in the Victorian period.
