Norah Fry Hospital, Shepton Mallet, Somerset
This building was originally the Shepton Mallet Union Workhouse. It was built in 1836. The architect was Jesse Gane. It was built in a cruciform plan with components including a chapel, a Master's office, an infirmary, a board room, a waiting room, a clerks office, a vagrant's ward, a probationary ward, a kitchen, a dining hall, a day room, dormitories and school rooms. In 1930 the workhouse became a mental hospital for females. It was called the West End House for Female Mental Defectives. Later it took male and female mental patients and was called the Norah Fry Hospital. This closed around 1990.
