North Mill, Bridge Foot, Belper, Derbyshire

North Mill was built by Strutts in 1803-4 and designed by William Strutt. It was built to replace an earlier mill of theirs that was destroyed by fire. It is one of the earliest examples of a completely iron framed mill in the world and was designed to be resistant to fire. Jedediah Strutt was associated with Richard Arkwright and by 1792 Strutts owned 5 cotton mills in Belper. There was a schoolroom on the top floor of the mill for children working there.
