The interior of an oast house showing the hops being pressed. Hops are not the main ingredient in beer but more of a flavouring. For every 100 litres of beer produced only 100 grams of hops are used to flavour it. Hops came in to use in England with the emigration of Flemish weavers and Dutch brewers, who had been using them to flavour their beer for centuries. Before this time English 'beer', made without hops was known as ale and any 'beer' made by immigrant brewers using hops was called beer. It wasn't until after 1600, when more English brewers had started to use hops that the word beer eventually came to be used for both types of drink.
