Old Merchant's House, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk
The Courtyard at the back of the Old Merchant's House with a replica of a washing line set up. The Old Merchant's House, Great Yarmouth, was built in the early 1600s. Two of the rooms have very ornate plaster ceilings from this date, one of which features the royal arms of James I (1603-25). At this time Great Yarmouth was one of the most prosperous fishing ports in England. By 1870 the property had been subdivided and was lived in by two families of fishermen, the Atkins and Rope families. It was bombed in 1942 but restored as a museum 1950-53. This site is now in the care of English Heritage (2011).
