Oldway Mansion, Paignton, Torbay
This mansion, was built in 1873. It was designed by GS Bridgman for Isaac Singer, founder of the sewing machine company. It is a stunning example of the French Renaissance style of architecture. It is based on buildings such as the Palace of Versailles. In 1914 it was converted into the American Women's War Hospital. In 1929 it was reused as the Torbay Country Club. The RAF requisitioned the building in 1939. It was bought from the Singer family by the Borough Council to use as their offices in 1945.
