Papplewick Pumping Station, Longdale Lane, Papplewick, Nottinghamshire
This highly finished waterworks proclaims civic pride - who would ever see it? It was built in 1884. Two beam engines, made by J Watt & Co, supplied Nottingham with 1.5 million gallons of water a day. The beam engines were replaced by electric pumps in the 1960s; otherwise, the engine house changed very little between 1935 and 1994. It is now a museum.
