Pevensey Castle, Pevensey, East Sussex
An elevated view looking north-west across the inner bailey at Pevensey Castle towards the gatehouse and north tower. There are men in uniform standing by a fenced enclosure in the foreground. The reverse of the print has the caption: 'In search of the monument of Adrian G (not found).' In the 4th century this was one of the last and strongest of the Roman 'Saxon Shore' forts. Two-thirds of the towered walls from this period still stand. It was the landing place of William the Conqueror's army in 1066. In the 12th century a full-scale Norman castle, with a great square keep and a powerful gatehouse, was built in one corner of the fort. It is now (2011) in the care of English Heritage.
