Promenade and Beach, New Brighton, Merseyside
Crowds of visitors gathered on the sands and promenade at New Brighton. There were several beaches along the south shore of the River Mersey but they were gradually covered over with mud. The tower in the background was demolished in 1921. New Brighton was a popular seaside resort right up to the 1950s. People travelled by ferry boat from Liverpool and Birkenhead. A steamer can just be seen in the background. After that time the resort gradually declined. The tower building with its ballroom and gardens was demolished after a fire in 1969. Later on the fairground and open air swimming pool were also demolished. Handwritten beneath the photograph is a record by J M Ponton of visits to New Brighton in 1901 and 1905.
