Richborough Roman Fort, Sandwich, Kent
Aerial reconstruction of the town, port and ceremonial arch at Richborough Roman Fort. In AD 43 the Roman army landed at Richborough which was then on the coast. The port became the entry and exit point to England for Roman soldiers. The fort was built in the mid 3rd century and is now two miles from the sea. The ceremonial arch was built to celebrate the successful invasion of England. This site is now in the care of English Heritage (2010). Read detailed archaeological description.
