Shakespeare Hotel, Chapel Street, Stratford upon Avon, Warwickshire
The five gables of the 16th century Shakespeare Hotel. The hotel was formerly three separate timber framed buildings. The name 'hostelrie' refers to the time when travellers on horseback or in carriages pulled by horses would have stayed here. As Stratford has become a major tourist town because it is the birthplace of Shakespeare his name is often used for shops, inns and other buildings. The buildings on either side have flat fronts and sash windows in the Georgian style. They may have been built later or just have had new facades added in front of an older timber frame.
