Spofforth Castle, Spofforth, North Yorkshire

These are the ruins of a 13th century fortified manor house. The first dwelling on the site was built some time after 1067 by William de Percy. His family had been given eighty six lordships by William the Conqueror. It remained the principal seat of the Percy's until the 14th century, when Henry Percy bought the manor of Alnwick. This site is now in the care of English Heritage (2010) and managed by Spofforth-with-Stockeld Parish Council.
