St Andrew's Gardens, Liverpool, Merseyside
This block of flats dates from the mid 1930s and was built under the direction of Sir Lancelot Keay, Director of Housing and City Architect. It was designed by John Hughes in the modernist style and inspired by Quarry Hill, Leeds. It was built from brick with concrete dressings in a sweeping semi circle with balconies and windows in long bands. It stands near Mount Pleasant and was known as the 'Bullring'. Several similar blocks of flats were built at the time but have all been demolished. St Andrews is currently (2010) in use as upmarket student apartments.
