The hospital is built on the site of the Medaieval Priory and hospital of St Bartholomew the Great. It was refounded in 1544, three surgeons being appointed in 1549, and the number of sisters increased to 12 in 1551. In 1568, Dr Rodrigo Lopez was appointed as the first physician. He was hanged at Tyburn in 1594, accused of attempting to poison the Queen. William Harvey became chief physician from 1609-33. Medical students are not recorded there until 1662.
